What Causes Snoring

Knowing what causes snoring and understanding the underlying reasons behind it can be the key to finding out how to prevent or stop it. Snoring might be a laughing matter or a joke to some people but on the serious side, it can be a major health concern or a reason for broken relationships among couples. It should not be taken lightly if it is something that affect one’s medical and social conditions.

What Causes Snoring – Searching for the Cause

Snoring occurs when the soft palate and the uvula vibrates producing a loud and distinct sound. The muscle tone in the tongue and soft palate has the tendency to decrease during sleeping. When this happens, the muscles in the throat area tend to relax more and collapse together which contributes to snoring. The more relaxed the tissues are, the greater are the chances of vibration or the sounds of snoring.

The narrowing of the nasal air passages is the reason why people snore. Anything that obstructs the airway will contribute to snoring. Anatomic features like large tonsils or adenoids can occupy space in the air passages, as well as bulky neck tissues and large tongue. This explains why when someone has colds or is suffering from flu, tends to snore louder than usual because the nasal passages are swollen.

Weight gain is another contributing factor to snoring. Heavy-weighted people tend to have excess collection of fats and tissues in the throat area which may compress and narrow the air passages. Features like double chin and thick neck seen in obese people can have similar effects. Moreover, the presence of fats in the abdominal cavity for overweight people can push up the diaphragm and compress the windpipe. This causes the blocking of the nasal air passages which leads to snoring.

Drugs, alcohol and smoking are another reasons why people snore. Tranquilizers, sleeping pills, alcohols and the likes when taken in excess can cause greater than normal relaxation of the muscles in the throat area which aggravates snoring. Smoking on the other hand, can produce excess mucus which can cause the membranes in the throat to swell which can restrict the air passages.

Sheer physical exhaustion like fatigue and overeating can also be associated with heavy snoring. Again, situations like these can lead to over relaxation of the muscles which can lead to deep sleep. Most snoring occurs during a period of deep sleep.

Age is another factor. People tend to snore more as they get older since the muscle tone tends to decrease as one ages. The elastic content of the tissues in the throat area diminishes and the upper airway becomes more floppy and less resilient. Snoring therefore, significantly increases as people gets older.

To sum it up, we can safely say that what causes snoring are mainly the anatomic factors and behavioral activities that can obstruct the nasal air passages. Addressing these major reasons can lead one into finding out how to best prevent snoring. If the situation gets worse, it is always best to consult the advice of a physician.
